Newporter 40 Ketch (Ackerman 40)
Description
The Newporter 40 Ketch (often called the Newporter 40 or Ackerman Newporter 40) is a classic American bluewater motorsailer/cruiser designed by Ackerman (likely the yard designer or associated naval architect) and built by Ackerman Boat Works (or associated yards like Dorchester Shipbuilding in the USA) starting in the mid-1950s (earliest examples ~1955–1956, with production continuing into the 1970s). It was constructed primarily as a wood-planked hull (often plywood sheathed in fiberglass for added strength and longevity), featuring a raised pilothouse (wheelhouse) for excellent visibility and protection, long keel for directional stability and easy self-steering, masthead ketch rig for balanced handling and easy shorthanded operation (cutter-rigged elements on the main mast in many), heavy displacement for a comfortable, sea-kindly motion in rough conditions, and a spacious, traditional teak/wood interior (typically 2–3 cabins with 6–8 berths, galley, heads, and ample tankage/storage for extended/liveaboard cruising). It's renowned as a robust, proven passagemaker from an era when fiberglass was emerging—many have completed long voyages (Pacific/Caribbean) and are cherished for their tank-like build, self-righting capability, and timeless appeal among classic yacht enthusiasts (dedicated owner communities exist for restoration/history).
