Super Skipjack

Description

The Super Skipjack (often just called Super-Skipjack) by Stevenson Projects is an upgraded, open-cockpit wooden daysailer that's perfect for sporty, fun sailing on protected waters. It evolved from the original 12 ft Skipjack (a simple plywood dinghy from the 1970s) into this 14 ft version around 2010–2011, borrowing the powerful gaff sloop rig directly from the popular Weekender (their 16 ft pocket cruiser). The result is a lightweight, responsive "sports car of a boat" — fast, nimble, and full of character, with no daggerboard needed (it sails balanced on its full-length keel). This design shines for first-time builders: it's stitch-and-glue plywood construction (beginner-friendly with detailed step-by-step plans, photos, and a booklet), low cost (~$1,000 in materials estimate), and easy to launch/trailer/car-top solo. It's great for day sailing, learning to sail, fishing, or exploring shallow spots — rows/motors well when unrigged, planes in a breeze, and handles 2–4 people comfortably.
