Sovereign 7.0
Description
The Sovereign 7.0 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by Arthur Edmunds as a versatile daysailer and pocket cruiser, suitable for solo, couple, or small family use on small lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. Introduced in 1980 by Sovereign Yachts (Custom Fiberglass Products) during the trailerable sailboat boom, it was part of a line started in 1978 by Bob Steeg, targeting beginners and recreational sailors with its lightweight, easy-to-launch construction. Production was low-volume (exact numbers unknown, estimated <200 units), ending around 1983 as the company shifted focus. It shares hull molds with the Sovereign 23/24 and Antares 17, emphasizing affordability and fun in protected waters. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and transom-hung rudder for stable, responsive handling, a narrow beam for easy trailering, and a masthead sloop rig for light-air performance and simplicity. The design prioritizes portability with a low displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a moderate ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts, though it's tender in heavier winds and best for inland/coastal use.
