Sovereign 24 (Princess 24)
Description
The Sovereign 24 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by Arthur Edmunds as a versatile daysailer and pocket cruiser, suitable for solo, couple, or small family use on small lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. Introduced in 1981 by Custom Fiberglass Products (under the Sovereign Yachts brand) during the early 1980s trailerable sailboat boom, it shares hull molds with the Sovereign 23 and S2 7.0, targeting beginners and recreational sailors with its lightweight, easy-to-launch construction. Production was low volume (estimated <200 units), ending around 1983 due to market shifts. The 24 ft version adds an inboard engine option over the 23, with minor deck refinements for improved aesthetics and usability. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and transom-hung rudder for stable, responsive handling, a narrow beam for easy trailering, and a masthead sloop rig for light-air performance and simplicity. The design prioritizes portability with a low displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a moderate ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts, though it's tender in heavier winds and best for inland/coastal use. Reviews from the era and modern forums note its "surprising stability for size" and generous sail plan, though its low righting moment limits offshore capability. Variants include the Sovereign Princess 24 (rebranded with cosmetic tweaks) and Sovereign 23 (shorter sibling).
