Peapod 13' (Beach Pea)
Description
The Peapod by Doug Hylan most commonly refers to his Beach Pea (also called the 13' Sailing Peapod or simply Hylan Peapod), a lightweight, elegant daysailer/rowboat inspired by traditional Maine coast peapods (double-ended workboats from Penobscot Bay dating to the 1870s) but modernized for glued-lapstrake plywood construction. Designed by Doug Hylan (of Hylan & Brown Boatbuilders / D.N. Hylan & Associates in Brooklin, Maine—a specialist in classic wooden boat design, building, and restoration since founding his firm in 1999) around the late 1990s/early 2000s, it prioritizes beginner-friendly building (detailed plans with full-size patterns, no lofting required), excellent rowing performance, seaworthiness in protected waters, stability for family use, and fun sailing with interchangeable rigs. It's built primarily by amateur/home builders or custom shops using stitch-and-glue or glued-lapstrake plywood/epoxy (lightweight yet durable), with options for lug, sprit, or gunter rigs plus centerboard/daggerboard.
