Paul's Boat Sailing canoe

Paul's Boat Sailing canoe

Description

The Paulsboat (often stylized as Paulsboat Sailing Canoe or Paul's Boat) is a custom-designed expedition-style sailing canoe created by renowned amateur boat designer Jim Michalak (a prolific plans-based designer known for simple, stitch-and-glue plywood boats). Commissioned around 2012 by Paul Moffitt (of the "famous sailing Moffitts" family, per Michalak's notes), it incorporates the owner's ideas for a versatile, shallow-draft cruiser capable of camp-cruising, expedition paddling/sailing, and handling thin waters like marshes, rivers, or coastal shallows. Built primarily via plywood/epoxy stitch-and-glue construction (plans available as PDF from sources like Duckworks Boat Builders Supply), it features a yawl rig (main + mizzen for balanced, easy handling and reefing), a very shallow flat or rockered bottom (draft as little as 3 inches/7 cm board up), large open cockpit/storage for gear, and options like foot-pedal steering or simple tiller. It's praised in builder accounts and articles (e.g., Duckworks Magazine project series) for its large capacity relative to size, ability to row/paddle efficiently when needed, dry ride, and suitability for solo or duo camp-cruising adventures; production is plans-based only (no factory builds), with dozens of examples built by home builders (some documented on Michalak owner groups, blogs like paulsboats.wordpress.com, and forums), and plans remain available today.
