Excel/Andrews ILC 40
Description
The EXCEL/ANDREWS ILC 40 (also known as the Excel/Andrews ILC 40 or simply Andrews ILC 40) is a high-performance International Level Class (ILC) 40-foot racing sailboat designed by Alan Andrews of Alan Andrews Yacht Design (Long Beach, CA). It was built by Excel Yachts (a California-based yard specializing in custom/ultralight racers in the 1990s era). This boat emerged during the heyday of the ILC rule (a predecessor to modern ORC/IRC classes), which emphasized speed, light displacement, deep drafts, and optimized for rating rules like IOR/IMSA/PHRF transitions—focusing on fast, planing-capable designs for buoy racing, offshore events, and distance races like Transpac or Pacific Cup. Notable examples include Growler (a well-known hull that raced successfully in Southern California fleets, e.g., 2nd in class at 2000 StFYC Big Boat Series and Long Beach Race Week) and others that competed in West Coast events. It earned recognition in Sailing World's Boat of the Year awards around 1994 (listed under "Excellence" in the multipurpose club racer category alongside other standouts). These boats were fast, demanding, and rewarding in skilled hands but required strong crew work and careful handling in heavy air due to their light weight and deep keels.
