E Scow
Description
The E Scow is an American one-design racing scow designed by Arnold Meyer Sr. in 1924 as a high-performance inland lake racer. It's a planing hull dinghy known for its speed, stability in light to moderate winds, and exhilarating downwind runs with a spinnaker. Built initially in wood by Johnson Boat Works (until 1998), production shifted to fiberglass by Melges Performance Sailboats. Over 1,000 have been built, with active fleets mainly in the upper Midwest (e.g., Minnesota, Wisconsin) but extending to the East Coast, South, and Texas. The National Class E Scow Association (NCESA), founded in 1928 and affiliated with US Sailing, governs the class to preserve its one-design integrity. The association promotes amateur racing, hosts the annual National Championship Regatta, and enforces scantling rules (construction specs) via member votes. Races follow World Sailing rules with class additions for fairness. Membership is open to owners (~300 active boats), and the class emphasizes equalized performance through strict limits on hulls, rigs, and sails.
