Allied 36 Princess
Description
The Allied Princess 36 (also referred to as the Princess 36) is a classic American-built fiberglass cruising sailboat designed by Arthur H. Edmunds and produced by the Allied Boat Company in Catskill, New York, from 1972 to around 1982. Approximately 140 hulls were built, making it Allied's most successful model. It's renowned among cruisers for its rugged, overbuilt construction—thick hand-laid fiberglass hull, encapsulated lead ballast, and balsa-cored deck—prioritizing seaworthiness and simplicity over racing performance or flashy interiors. Primarily configured as a ketch (most common) or cutter rig, it's a full-keel bluewater cruiser ideal for couples or small families, especially in shallow waters like the Chesapeake Bay, Florida Keys, or Bahamas. Owners praise its comfortable motion in seas, excellent tracking, and easy-to-balance rig that often allows hands-off steering with the worm-gear system. It's initially tender but stiffens up without burying the rail, and while not a strong windward performer, it excels off the wind and in heavy weather. A MkII version (circa 1980+) added a bowsprit for improved sail options.
