Cape Dory Co
Cape Dory Company, founded by Andrew Vavolotis in 1963, became renowned for building traditional-style fiberglass sailboats with exceptional seaworthiness. Based in Massachusetts, Cape Dory produced a range of boats from 19 to 45 feet, working with designers including Carl Alberg and later Alberg's protégé Robbie Doyle. The Cape Dory Typhoon (19 feet) became one of the most popular small cruisers ever built, with over 3,000 produced. Cape Dory boats were characterized by full keels, heavy displacement, traditional styling, and bulletproof construction. They became the choice of serious cruising sailors who valued seaworthiness over speed. The company operated until 1992, leaving a legacy of well-built, highly regarded yachts.
