Bruce Kirby

Bruce Kirby (1929-2021) was one of the world's most successful small boat designers, creator of the iconic Laser dinghy and numerous other popular classes. Born in Ottawa and working primarily in Canada and the US, Kirby designed over 50 boat types during his 50-year career. His masterpiece, the Laser (1970), became the world's most popular single-handed dinghy with over 200,000 built and Olympic class status since 1996. Other notable designs include the SORC-winning Runaway, the Etchells 22, Ideal 18, and Norwalk Islands One-Design. Kirby's designs are characterized by simplicity, performance, and buildability. He received numerous honors including induction into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame and continued designing until his death in 2021.
