Hood, Ted
Frederick E. 'Ted' Hood (1927-2013) was one of America's most successful yacht designers and sailmakers, whose boats dominated racing in the 1960s-1980s. Based in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Hood designed numerous racing champions including Courageous (1974, 1977 America's Cup winner), Robin (1970 One Ton Cup winner), and many other successful designs. He simultaneously built Hood Sails into the world's largest sailmaking operation. Hood's designs were characterized by sophisticated engineering, excellent windward performance, and meticulous attention to detail. He also created successful production boats including the Bristol 40. Hood's influence on both yacht design and sail development was profound and lasting.
