Alsberg Brothers Yachts
Alsberg Brothers Boatworks (often called Alsberg Brothers Yachts) was an innovative American boatbuilding company based in Santa Cruz, California, specializing in high-performance fiberglass racing sailboats during the 1980s. Founded by brothers Terry and Peter Alsberg in 1982, the yard focused on lightweight, vacuum-bagged constructions that emphasized speed, stiffness, and seaworthiness. Terry, with prior experience at Moore Sailboats (builders of the Moore 24), brought expertise in ultralight racers, leading to collaborations with designer Carl Schumacher. The company produced over 200 hulls across a handful of models before closing in 1988 due to economic recessions (1981–1982 launch timing) and pricing pressures—selling custom-quality boats at production prices. Alsberg Brothers' legacy endures in active one-design fleets, where their boats still dominate PHRF and club racing on the West Coast.
The brothers' motto reflected their ethos: "Build like a custom yard, price like production"—pioneering epoxy vacuum-bagging for superior strength-to-weight ratios, ahead of many competitors.
