Pacific Seacraft 25 Cutter (Mk II)
Description
The PS-25 Cutter refers to the Pacific Seacraft 25 (often abbreviated PS-25 or PSC 25) in its cutter-rigged Mark II (Mk II) variant. This is the iconic first model from Pacific Seacraft, a legendary American builder known for overbuilt, seaworthy pocket cruisers. Designed by Henry Mohrschladt (company founder) and introduced in 1976, the PS-25 started life in his garage as a trailerable double-ender inspired by 19th-century workboats/fishing vessels (e.g., Scandinavian redningskoites, Colin Archer types, or Outer Banks designs)—tough, load-carrying, and capable in rough conditions. The cutter rig (with a small bowsprit adding ~2 ft to LOA) came in later Mk II versions (around 1978+), improving sail balance, short-handed handling, and versatility in varying winds (e.g., club-footed staysail for easy reefing or heavy weather). Early boats were sloop-rigged without the bowsprit. Total production: ~157 hulls (MKI + MKII) from 1976–1981; now out of production but highly regarded in bluewater circles. It's a compact, full-keel (long keel with cutaway forefoot) trailerable cruiser—immensely strong (heavy fiberglass layup, encapsulated lead ballast), low-maintenance, and surprisingly capable offshore for its size.
