Whitehall 18

Description

Historical records (including Smithsonian models and John Gardner's writings) describe 18-foot Whitehalls as a common "average" size for the era: fast, seaworthy workboats used in harbors for ferrying people, goods, or even by shore patrols. They offer more stability, carrying capacity, and room than smaller 12'–14' models, while still being graceful and efficient to row. Modern reproductions or customs in this length are rarer than the popular 14'–17' sizes from builders like Whitehall Rowing & Sail (who focus on 14' and 17' Classics) or Gig Harbor Boat Works, but custom yards, home builders, or one-offs do produce them. Some are rigged for sliding-seat sculling, fixed seats for traditional rowing, or even sailing (often with sprit, lug, or simple sloop setups like your previous interest). At 18', it's ideal for longer rows, family outings (carries 4–6 people comfortably), picnic trips, or light touring — with that signature tracking keel for straight-line efficiency and a wineglass transom for beauty.
