Westerly Chieftain 26
Description
The Westerly Chieftain 26 (often just called the Chieftain) is a British center-cockpit pocket cruiser from Westerly Marine Construction Ltd. (Hamble/Waterlooville, UK), built from 1972 to 1976. It is essentially a center-cockpit/aft-cabin development of the extremely popular Westerly Centaur 26 (the most-produced British sailboat ever, with over 2,400 hulls), sharing the same hull molds and basic Laurent Giles design lines but with added features for better privacy and offshore comfort: a small aft cabin (quarter berth or double), center cockpit (wheel steering standard), and a short bowsprit for anchor handling. Designer: Jack Laurent Giles (or Laurent Giles & Partners, the firm; Giles was Westerly's go-to for their early successful line, including the Centaur on which the Chieftain is based). Builder: Westerly Marine Construction Ltd. (UK) — limited production (~76–79 hulls total, per broker archives and owner estimates; much rarer than the Centaur due to the center-cockpit layout and higher cost).
