Westerly 31 (32) Ketch / Renown/ Pentland
Description
The Westerly 31 Ketch refers to the ketch-rigged variants in Westerly's popular 31-foot series, primarily the Westerly Renown (center cockpit ketch) and Westerly Pentland (aft cockpit ketch), both built on the same hull as the sloop-rigged Longbow (aft cockpit) and Berwick (twin keel). These were produced by Westerly Marine Construction Ltd. in the UK from the early 1970s to late 1970s/early 1980s (Renown ~1972–1979, Pentland similar timeframe; total production across the 31 ft family exceeded 1,000 hulls, with ketches in the hundreds). Designed by Laurent Giles & Partners (a renowned British firm known for seaworthy, practical cruisers like the Westerly line), the series emphasized solid GRP construction, good stability, and versatile sailing—making the ketch versions especially favored for short-handed or family offshore/coastal cruising due to the split rig's easier handling in heavy weather.
