Welsford SEI

Welsford SEI

Description

The SEI (pronounced "say") is a double-ended lapstrake sailing/rowing boat designed by John Welsford, the New Zealand-based naval architect renowned for practical, heritage-inspired small craft (e.g., Pathfinder, Navigator, Walkabout) that blend traditional aesthetics with modern plywood/epoxy construction for amateur builders. Welsford drew inspiration from historic Norwegian Hardangerfjord faering boats (traditional clinker rowing/sailing craft) but modernized the SEI for lighter weight (about 50% lighter), slightly wider beam, better stability, and a focus on sailing first with rowing as a strong secondary mode—reversing the traditional faering emphasis. It's named after the sei (a baleen whale species), reflecting its graceful, purposeful lines.
