Tropic Bird
Description
The Tropic Bird is a 19-foot camp-cruising surf dory (double-ended centerboarder) designed by Ed Davis of Tremont, Maine. It was featured in WoodenBoat magazine #163 (November/December 2001) as a simple, beachable open boat for adventurous single- or double-handed coastal exploring, rowing/sailing, and overnighting. The design draws inspiration from traditional North Shore surf dories, with a bold sheer, lovely lines, and a focus on simplicity, seaworthiness, and ease of construction for amateur builders. It is not a production boat but a plans-based or one-off wooden design. Several examples and adaptations exist, including the well-known Sparrow (a ketch-rigged version built by Kees Prins in Port Townsend, Washington, adapted from Tropic Bird) and other home-built boats like Avocet.
