Trapper Sovereign 400 (Viking 28)
Description
The Trapper Sovereign 400 (also known simply as the Trapper 400) is a British sailboat designed as a compact coastal cruiser-racer, suitable for family day sailing, weekend overnights, and club racing on lakes or protected waters. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and spade rudder for responsive handling and upwind pointing, a moderate beam for stability, and a masthead sloop rig for straightforward sail power in moderate winds. The design emphasizes light-air performance with a high sail area/displacement ratio for quick acceleration and a balanced ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts. Introduced in 1970 by Trapper Yachts Ltd. in the United Kingdom, the Trapper 400 was designed by the renowned Canadian firm Cuthbertson & Cassian (known for IOR racers like the C&C line) during the early 1970s fiberglass boom. It evolved from the earlier Trapper 28 (a slightly different interior layout) and was built until the mid-1970s, with approximately 200 units produced. In Canada, it was marketed as the Viking 28.
