Tayana 55 CB
Description
The Tayana 55 CB (often referred to as Tayana 55 Centerboard or keel/centerboard variant) is a renowned center-cockpit bluewater cruising sailboat built by Ta Yang Yacht Building Co. (Taiwan) from 1982 to around 1991, with approximately 65 hulls produced overall (including fixed-keel versions; CB models are less common but highly sought after for versatility). Designed by Peter Beeldsnijder (some sources credit Robert Perry influence in Tayana lineage), it features heavy fiberglass construction (GRP), a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder (or keel/CB option for reduced draft), cutter rig (masthead or near-masthead with staysail and genoa), spacious interior volume (3 cabins, large saloon/galley, aft owner's suite with en-suite head, good headroom ~6'6"), generous tankage (fuel/water for extended passages), and a reputation as a sturdy, comfortable "go-anywhere" cruiser with excellent seakeeping, load-carrying ability, and performance for its heavy displacement—often compared favorably to larger yachts in comfort and capability despite modest speed. The centerboard version allows shallow-draft access (e.g., Bahamas, ICW) while providing deeper draft for better upwind performance and stability when down; many have in-mast furling or electric winches for shorthanded sailing, reliable inboard diesels (e.g., Perkins or Yanmar 100–110 hp), and options like generator, water maker, and solar for liveaboard/offshore use.
