Tartan 41
Description
The Tartan 41 is a classic 40'8" (12.4 m) fiberglass monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #2095) as a high-performance offshore racer-cruiser, commissioned by Tartan Marine founder Charlie Britton to rival the contemporary Swan 40, offering responsive handling, stability, and seaworthiness for coastal racing or blue water passages with a small crew. Built by Tartan Marine in Painesville, Ohio, from 1972 to 1980 with 67 hulls produced (plus variants like the ketch-rigged Tartan 41 Passagemaker/Offshore or TOCK for easier shorthanded sailing, and a stretched Tartan 42 from 1980–1984 with 16 built), it features a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder (early models had undersized versions causing steering issues in gusts, later retrofitted with deeper lead-bulb keels to 7'6" draft for improved pointing), masthead sloop rig (tall mast option), and elegant IOR-influenced lines with a raked stem, moderate beam, and reverse transom—delivering a hull speed of 7.4 knots and a moderate displacement/length ratio of 265 that classifies it as a moderate cruiser, stiff with a 124° limit of positive stability and a sail area/displacement ratio of 16.5 for good performance in a breeze, though slightly tender early on. Constructed with rugged hand-laid fiberglass hulls (later lightened for speed) and balsa-cored decks, the simple teak-trimmed interior sleeps 6–7 in a functional layout with V-berth forward, saloon settees, galley, nav station, and quarter berth, ideal for upgrades to modern cruising standards,
