Description
The Tartan 34-2 is a refined 34'4" (10.5 m) fiberglass monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (based on design #2150-C2, with input from Tim Jackett) as an updated cruiser-racer, extending the stern and modifying the interior of the earlier 1979 Tartan 33R for improved space and handling while maintaining the pedigree's balance of performance and seaworthiness for coastal or light offshore sailing. Built by Tartan Marine in Painesville, Ohio, from 1984 to 1989 with 110 hulls produced, it features a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars, a fixed Scheel keel (shoal draft option: 4'6" / 1.36 m) or deep fin keel, internally-mounted spade rudder, and a reverse transom for enhanced cockpit ergonomics—delivering a hull speed of 7.3 knots and a moderate displacement/length ratio of 250 that classifies it as a moderate cruiser, with a sail area/displacement ratio of 16.8 for responsive upwind work and stability (42% ballast ratio) in a breeze, though it requires crew for optimal racing. Constructed with solid hand-laid fiberglass hulls and balsa-cored decks for durability, the updated teak-trimmed interior sleeps 5–6 in a practical layout with V-berth forward, saloon settees, U-shaped galley, nav station, and quarter berth, offering better volume than its predecessor for family weekends.
