Tartan 33
Description
The Tartan 33 is a classic 33'8" (10.3 m) fiberglass monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #2150-C2) as a versatile cruiser-racer bridging the gap between the high-performance Tartan Ten and the more cruising-oriented Tartan 37, prioritizing balanced handling, seaworthiness, and family comfort for coastal or light offshore sailing. Built by Tartan Marine in Painesville, Ohio, from 1979 to 1984 with approximately 215 hulls produced, it features a fractional sloop rig (or optional masthead on the racing-oriented 33R variant, with only 14 built) and two keel options: a standard Scheel keel (4'6" draft for shoal access) or deep fin keel (6'3" draft for better upwind performance), delivering a hull speed of 7.2 knots and a moderate displacement/length ratio of 265 that classifies it as a moderate cruiser—stable and forgiving with a ballast/displacement ratio of 44% for heavy weather confidence, though its sail area/displacement ratio of 16.5 suits it for spirited club racing or relaxed passages rather than extreme blue water. Constructed with solid hand-laid fiberglass hulls and balsa-cored decks for durability, the teak-trimmed interior sleeps 5–6 in a practical layout with V-berth forward, saloon settees, U-shaped galley, nav station, and quarter berth, offering good headroom and storage for weekend escapes.
