Description
The Tanzer 27 is a classic Canadian sailboat designed by C. Raymond Hunt as a compact, conservative coastal cruiser suitable for couples or small families, with capabilities for club racing and occasional offshore passages in fair weather. It's a recreational fin-keel sloop known for its sturdy solid-fiberglass construction, predictable handling, and practical layout, emphasizing simplicity and affordability over speed or luxury. Evolved from the Paceship PY 26 (designed in the late 1970s and built until 1981), Tanzer Industries acquired the molds and modified it slightly—adding beam and refining the deck—for a short production run starting in 1982. Built in Dorval, Quebec, until Tanzer's bankruptcy in 1986, only a limited number were produced (estimates suggest 50-100 units, as it was a brief offering amid the company's focus on smaller models like the Tanzer 22). The design's roots in Hunt's conservative philosophy prioritize seaworthiness and ease of maintenance, making it a niche favorite on the used market today.
