Description

The Tanzer 22 is a classic Canadian trailerable sailboat designed by Johann Tanzer as a versatile, family-friendly coastal cruiser that's also competitive in club racing. It's a small recreational keelboat known for its flush-deck design, roomy cockpit, and balanced performance, making it ideal for weekend overnights, day sails, or PHRF fleets with 2-4 crew on lakes, bays, or near-coastal waters. Developed as an affordable, no-nonsense pocket cruiser to bridge daysailers and larger keelboats, it quickly became a hit in the 1970s for its value and seaworthiness. First introduced in 1970, it was built until 1986 by Tanzer Industries in Canada (primarily in Dorion, Quebec, with about 270 units in Edenton, N.C., and 167 in Arlington, WA.), with 2,271 units produced—making it the most popular Tanzer model. Tanzer Industries ceased operations in 1986 due to financial woes, after which the tooling passed to Kisber & Co. (brief production) and then Canadian Yacht Builders (none built). The Tanzer 22 Class Association later acquired the design, tooling, and name through member shares, though no confirmed new builds have occurred since. A short-lived variant, the Tanzer 22 T/4 (introduced mid-1970s), featured a modified rudder and sailplan for IOR 1/4-ton racing but was discontinued after rule changes. About 200 keel/centerboard models were made for shallower drafts.
