Tammie Norrie

Tammie Norrie

Description

The Tammie Norrie, designed by Iain Oughtred in 1993, is a 14 ft 6 in (4.42 m) glued-lapstrake plywood sailing canoe inspired by traditional Shetland skiffs, optimized for solo or light-crew coastal exploration, fishing, and camp-cruising in sheltered waters with a shallow-draft hull, wineglass sections, and built-in flotation. Featuring a 68 ft² (6.3 m²) dipping lug sail on an unstayed mast (requiring the classic yard dip to tack), a daggerboard, and efficient rowing with 7–8 ft oars, it weighs around 140–160 lbs. (64–73 kg), offers sitting headroom under a sliding hatch, and sleeps one under a boom tent. Built from 4–6 mm marine ply using stitch-and-glue lapstrake, the Tammie Norrie excels in light-air performance, stability, and portability, with detailed plans available from the WoodenBoat Store or Classic Marine, earning praise for its graceful lines, forgiving handling, and authentic traditional rig among amateur builders and heritage sailors.
