The Tahitian 45-50 by Hartley (officially the Tahitian 45-50 from Hartley Boats plans) is a versatile, proven ocean-going motor-sailer/cruiser design from Richard Hartley's long-established New Zealand-based plans company (Hartley Boats, since 1938). It's one of the most popular in their Tahitian series, with thousands of ocean miles logged by owner-built examples—emphasizing safety, comfort, liveaboard suitability, charter potential, or serious bluewater cruising. Plans are available directly from hartley-boats.com for $275 USD (with a $30 study pack option for initial review). They're drawn primarily for ferro-cement (ferroconcrete) hull construction—robust, low-cost, and impact-resistant—but easily adaptable to wood strip-plank or even GRP/fiberglass. Many builds feature a clipper bow (with or without bowsprit) for classic looks and better anchoring. Power is typically 100 hp+ diesel for motoring in calms or heavy weather.
