Stone Horse
Description
The Stone Horse, officially the Stone Horse 26 or Crocker 26 Sloop, is a classic American trailerable cruiser-racer sailboat designed by Samuel Sturgis Crocker in 1931 as Design #159. Originally built in wood by Crocker Boat Yard in Manchester, Massachusetts (approximately 30–40 units pre-WWII), it was adapted into fiberglass by Edey & Duff in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, starting in 1968, with production continuing until around 2010. Over 100 fiberglass units were produced, often called the Stone Horse 26 to distinguish it from a shorter 23-foot wooden version. Renowned for its cutter-rigged sloop configuration, long keel, and Cape Cod aesthetics, it’s prized for seaworthiness in rough coastal waters (e.g., Buzzards Bay, Maine) and simplicity for daysailing or short overnights. Owners love its Airex foam-cored fiberglass construction, forgiving handling, and "lively" performance, but note the low headroom and dated layout limit extended cruising.
