Stevans 47
Description
The Stevens 47 is a renowned 47'0" (14.3 m) heavy-displacement monohull sailboat designed by Rod Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens (design #2390) in 1981 as a fast, three-stateroom blue water cruiser, emphasizing seaworthiness, speed, and family comfort with a cutter rig for versatile shorthanded or crewed sailing on long passages. Built initially by Queen Long Marine Industrial Co. Ltd. in Taiwan under the Stevens Custom Yachts brand from 1981 to 1986 (56 hulls), the molds were later acquired by the yard, which rebranded and continued production as the Hylas 47 (1986–1991, 82 hulls) and eventually the extended Hylas 49, totaling 138 boats overall—many of which have proven themselves as circumnavigators, including the liveaboard Totem (ex-Don't Look Back, 1982 hull) that has logged thousands of ocean miles since 2008. Featuring a modern raked bow for anchor clearance, slight sheer, "rocket ship" stern, elongated fin keel (or optional shoal draft), and skeg-hung rudder for balanced tracking and protection, it's constructed with a solid fiberglass hull (up to 1" thick) and balsa-cored deck for durability and lightness, offering a hull speed of 8.1 knots, high ballast/displacement ratio (42%) for stiffness in heavy weather, and a sail area/displacement ratio of 16.7 that delivers responsive performance upwind and down—faster than many contemporaries while maintaining a soft, sea-kindly motion.
