Southerly 115
Description
The Southerly 115 is a 36.83-foot masthead sloop (with some examples fitted as cutters featuring an inner forestay) featuring the brand’s signature lifting/swing keel system, designed by Dick Carter (early models) with later input from Rob Humphreys and the Northshore Design Team. It was built by Northshore Yachts in Itchenor, UK, starting in 1984 (with production running into the early 2000s across Mk I, II, III, and IV evolutions). Exact total production numbers are not precisely published but form part of the broader Southerly range (over 1,100 boats built overall), with the 115 being a popular mid-size “go-anywhere” model; many examples remain in service today, often with updated rigging and interiors. The boat is renowned for its versatile variable-draft capability: the heavy swing keel (a substantial portion of total ballast) allows it to dry out upright on tidal flats or access shallow estuaries/creeks while providing excellent stability and windward performance when lowered. It offers solid fiberglass construction (with balsa-cored deck), comfortable center-cockpit or aft-cockpit layouts with accommodations for 6+, and a reputation as a capable coastal/offshore family cruiser that balances shoal-draft freedom with respectable bluewater potential.
