South Coast 23

South Coast 23

Description

The South Coast 23 is an American 23-foot trailerable masthead sloop designed by Carl Alberg as a daysailer and pocket cruiser, first built in 1965 by South Coast Seacraft Co. of Shreveport, Louisiana. It was produced alongside the South Coast 21 and 22, with a few hundred boats completed in fiberglass (exact total not precisely documented but described as limited compared to the highly successful South Coast 22, which exceeded 3,000 units). The boat was offered in daysailer and four-berth cruiser versions, available as factory-complete or in kit form, making it an affordable entry into trailerable sailing during the 1960s–1970s boom. It features a long keel with transom-hung rudder, simple accommodations, and solid construction typical of early Alberg designs—emphasizing ease of trailering, launching, and forgiving handling for coastal daysailing or short cruises. Key features include a practical layout with modest headroom, outboard power, and a stable, seaworthy hull for its size, with many examples still actively sailed and restored today.
