South Coast 22

South Coast 22

Description

The South Coast 22 is a popular American 22-foot trailerable masthead sloop (sometimes described with swing or fixed keel options) designed by Carl Alberg in collaboration with James Monroe and Hollis Metcalf. It was first built in 1968 by South Coast Seacraft Co. of Shreveport, Louisiana, as an evolution of the earlier South Coast 21 to better suit the growing market for affordable pocket cruisers with improved accommodations. It became the builder’s most successful model, with over 3,000 boats produced before production ended around 1981 (the company built over 4,000 sailboats total across its lineup). The fiberglass hull features a swing keel for easy trailering and beaching, basic cruising accommodations for 4, and a simple, forgiving layout ideal for daysailing, coastal cruising, or club racing on inland lakes and protected waters. It is known for its solid construction, decent stability, and easy handling by a small crew or solo sailor. Key features include a roomy cockpit, outboard motor well, and practical interior with a small galley and V-berth—emphasizing versatility and low maintenance over high performance.
