South Coast 21
Description
The South Coast 21 is an American 21-foot trailerable fractional sloop designed by Carl Alberg as a daysailer and first built in 1965 by South Coast Seacraft Co. (Shreveport, Louisiana). Production continued until around 1979, with approximately 300 boats completed in fiberglass construction. It was developed during the rise of affordable trailerable sailboats, sharing the builder’s early focus on Alberg designs (the company later pivoted to the more successful South Coast 22 swing-keel variant). Minor changes occurred during the run, including moving the fixed keel a few inches aft on hulls numbered above 90 for improved balance. An active one-design racing fleet persists today, notably on Lake Travis near Austin, Texas, with examples also sailed on other inland waters and coastal areas. Key features include a slim, relatively speedy hull for its era, simple fractional rig, fixed keel with 3 ft draft, and basic daysailer accommodations—emphasizing easy trailering, launching, and fun performance for club racing or family outings rather than extended cruising. It is described as responsive and stable for its size, though with modest accommodations typical of 1960s pocket racers/daysailers.
