Slipper 17 (Seaward 17)
Description
The Slipper 17 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by Nick Hake as a pocket cruiser and daysailer, suitable for solo or small family use on small lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. Introduced in 1981 by Hake Yachts (initially under Starboard Yacht Company) in Miami, Florida, during the trailerable sailboat boom, it was Hake's early entry-level design targeting beginners and recreational sailors with its lightweight, easy-to-launch construction and simple rig for light-air performance. Production ran until 1991, with low-volume output (estimated <100 units), later rebranded as the Seaward 17 by Hake Yachts. The design features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and transom-hung rudder for stable, responsive handling, a narrow beam for easy trailering, and a fractional sloop rig for light-air performance and simplicity, with a low displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a moderate ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts, though its low righting moment limits it to calm conditions.
