Description
The 15' Skerrieskiff, designed by Iain Oughtred, is a lightweight, glued-lapstrake plywood rowing and sailing skiff inspired by traditional Shetland working boats, optimized for solo or duo coastal exploration, fishing, and day sailing in sheltered waters with a shallow draft and stable hull form. Measuring 15 ft (4.57 m) LOA, 5 ft (1.52 m) beam, and weighing around 150–180 lbs. (68–82 kg) with built-in flotation, it features a transom stern, wineglass sections for smooth tracking, and a daggerboard slot paired with a balanced lug mainsail of 58 ft² (5.4 m²) on an unstayed mast for simple rigging and reefing. Built via stitch-and-glue or traditional lapstrake methods from 6 mm marine ply, the skiff rows efficiently with long oars, planes under light power, and offers forgiving performance under sail, making it ideal for amateur builders using Oughtred’s detailed plans (available from WoodenBoat Store or Classic Marine) and popular for its classic lines, versatility, and ease of trailering.
