Skate

Skate

Description

is an Australian 14-foot racing dinghy designed by Jack Herrick, Vince Minter, and Doug Jeffkins. This distinctive two-person racing dinghy was first built in 1958 and features a unique design element that sets it apart from conventional small boat racing classes - two 10-foot adjustable hiking planks that allow crew members to extend their weight further outboard for enhanced stability and performance. The original design underwent significant evolution when Doug Jeffkins redesigned and widened the boat in 1971, improving its sailing characteristics and competitive potential. Construction methods also advanced during this period, with fiberglass hulls appearing in 1971 to complement the original wood construction, followed by foam sandwich construction from 1979 that provided improved strength-to-weight ratios and enhanced safety through positive flotation.
