Sharptown Barge
Description
The Sharptown Barge is a classic 28 ft plywood sharpie sailboat designed by William C. Robinson, featured in Rudder magazine (June 1938 issue) as plans for amateur builders. Popular during the Depression era, dozens to low hundreds were homebuilt in the U.S. (especially Chesapeake region near Sharptown, MD), using simple carvel-plank plywood over frames, centerboard, gaff sloop rig, and shoal draft for shallow bays—emphasizing economy, stability, and speed under sail or oar. Key features: open cockpit with cuddy option, 5,500 lb displacement, trailerable hull, and versatile fishing/cruising design.
