Serendipity 43
Description
The Serendipity 43 is a 42.5-foot (LOA 42.52 ft) fiberglass monohull IOR (International Offshore Rule) racer/cruiser designed by Doug Peterson (design #77) and built by New Orleans Marine in Louisiana, USA, from 1979 to 1982. The first boat, Wings, was initially constructed of C-Flex over a plywood jig in 1979; a mold was then taken from it for semi-production, resulting in a total of 26 boats built. These were advanced for the era, with many campaigned as grand-prix level IOR boats—examples like Acadia won the SORC in 1980, another Serendipity 43 won overall in 1983, and Wings placed well in the 1979 TransPac and Big Boat Series. Construction emphasized performance with a fin keel and spade rudder, high ballast ratio, and relatively light displacement for speed, though many were considered somewhat fragile for sustained heavy use and were often viewed as semi-disposable racing machines requiring annual maintenance.
