Sequin 44 CB (Seguin 44 CB)
Description
The Sequin 44 CB (also known as the Seguin 44 Centerboard or Keel/CB variant) is a 43.08-foot semi-custom fiberglass monohull performance cruising sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding in Thomaston, Maine. It shares the same basic hull mold as the standard Sequin 44 and related Sequin 46 (with traditional counter stern), with production occurring from around 1980 onward as part of the low-volume series (total Sequin 44/46 hulls estimated at roughly 14–16, with the centerboard version being one of the optional underbody configurations chosen by owners). Construction featured solid fiberglass below the waterline (sometimes with Kevlar reinforcement) and cored topsides, allowing for highly individualized deck layouts, rigs, and interiors. The centerboard (or keel/centerboard) option provided a minimum draft of 5.25 ft (board up) for improved access to shallower cruising grounds while retaining good upwind performance and stability with the board down (deeper draft typically around 7–8+ ft in related keel variants, though exact max draft for CB models varies slightly by build). It is a masthead sloop engineered for a balance of speed, safety, and short-handed bluewater or coastal cruising, with a reported sail area of 929 sq ft. Key features include robust offshore-capable construction, excellent motion in a seaway, substantial displacement for comfort, and practical yet elegant accommodations (typically sleeping 6–8 with high-quality custom joinery). Like the fixed-keel Sequin 44, these boats were finished on a bespoke basis and are praised for their seaworthiness and durability; surviving examples (such as the well-known Magic, built in 1983) often undergo refits and continue to cruise extensively.
