Seaward 22
Description
The Seaward 22 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by Nick Hake as a compact coastal cruiser-racer, suitable for family day sailing, weekend overnights, and light recreational use on lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. Introduced in 1985 by Hake Yachts (under the Seaward brand) in Florida during the trailerable sailboat resurgence, it was Hake's evolution of his earlier Slipper 17, targeting beginners and recreational sailors with its lightweight, easy-to-launch construction and centerboard for shallow drafts. Production was low volume (estimated <100 units), ending in the late 1980s as Hake shifted to larger models. The design features a fiberglass monohull with a keel/centerboard and transom-hung rudder for stable, responsive handling, a moderate beam for stability, and a fractional sloop rig for efficient sail trim and good light-air performance, with a low displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a moderate ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts, though its low righting moment limits it to calm conditions.
