Saturna 33 Pilothouse (Truant 33)
Description
The Saturna 33 Pilothouse (also known as the Saturna 33 or Truant 33 in its original form) is a classic Pacific Northwest cruising sailboat, designed by renowned naval architect William (Bill) Garden. It originated as the Truant 33 built by Truant Marine in British Columbia, Canada (starting around 1977), with later production under Saturna Yachts (Vancouver Island area) in the 1980s. A small number were also built in California by North Coast Yachts (1979–1982). The pilothouse version features an enclosed helm station for protected steering in cold/wet weather—ideal for year-round Pacific Northwest or Great Lakes use—while an "Offshore" variant exists without the pilothouse. It's a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder, masthead sloop rig, and a reputation as a sturdy, comfortable coastal/offshore cruiser. Owners and reviews highlight its solid build, good motion in a seaway, excellent interior volume (especially in the pilothouse for light and visibility), and suitability for liveaboard or extended cruising in cooler climates.
