Santana 525

Description

The Santana 525 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by W. Shad Turner as a one-design racer and International Offshore Rule (IOR) Quarter Ton class racer-cruiser, ideal for club racing, day sailing, and occasional overnights on lakes or coastal waters. It features a lightweight fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and spade rudder for agile performance, a fractional sloop rig for responsive handling, and a compact interior suitable for short crews. The design excels in pointing ability and helm responsiveness, with a low wetted surface for speed in light to moderate winds. Introduced in 1977 by W.D. Schock Corp in the United States, the Santana 525 was built until 1982, with 261 units produced. Conceived during the IOR era to compete in quarter-ton fleets while offering family-friendly versatility, it drew from Turner's experience with earlier Santana models like the Santana 30. Production ceased due to economic shifts and high tooling costs (new molds would exceed $30,000 today), but active one-design fleets persist, notably at Kelowna Yacht Club in British Columbia and U.S. venues like Cherokee Lake.
