Santana 39 Sloop
Description
The Santana 39 is an American sailboat designed as a versatile racer-cruiser, blending competitive performance for club and offshore racing with ample accommodations for coastal cruising and occasional passages. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder for balanced handling and protection, a wide beam for stability, and a masthead sloop rig that provides strong sail-carrying ability in varied conditions. The design emphasizes seaworthiness, with a moderate displacement/length ratio and a comfort ratio suitable for extended weekends or short voyages, while its capsize screening formula indicates offshore capability. Introduced in 1972 by W.D. Schock Corp in the United States, the Santana 39 was a collaboration between renowned designers Gary Mull (known for IOR racers) and W. Shad Turner (a Schock in-house talent behind earlier Santana models). Production ran until 1979, with only 20 boats built, making it a rare classic. It was conceived during the IOR era to compete in handicap fleets while offering practical cruising features like a spacious cockpit and functional interior.
