Santana 30/30
Description
The Santana 30/30 is an American sailboat designed by Bruce Nelson and Bruce Marek (Nelson/Marek) as a Midget Ocean Racing Club (MORC) racer-cruiser, offering competitive performance for club racing and coastal cruising with practical accommodations for weekend overnights. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and spade rudder for agile handling, a wide beam for stability, and a masthead sloop rig that excels in medium winds. The design prioritizes a low center of gravity and efficient hull shape for upwind pointing, with a comfort ratio suitable for short passages. Introduced in 1982 by W.D. Schock Corp in the United States, the Santana 30/30 was built until 1987, with 100 units produced. It was conceived under the MORC handicap rule to balance racing speed with cruising utility, drawing on Nelson/Marek's IOR expertise. Production was split evenly between racing and cruising variants, with post-1985 models featuring elliptical keels and rudders for improved hydrodynamics. Reviews highlight its responsiveness and solid build ("built like a tank"), though some owners note squirrely downwind handling in heavy air and the need for racing upgrades like rod rigging. It's distinct from the earlier 1974 Santana 30 by Shad Turner.
