Santana 23

Description

The Santana 23 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by W. Shad Turner as a versatile racer-cruiser for club racing, day sailing, and occasional coastal overnights on lakes or protected waters. It features a lightweight fiberglass monohull with a raked stem, reverse transom, and spade rudder for responsive handling, emphasizing stability in moderate winds and shallow-draft options for easy launching. The design offers a balance of performance (high sail area/displacement ratio for acceleration) and simplicity, with a compact interior for small crews. Introduced in 1978 by W.D. Schock Corp in the United States, the Santana 23 was Turner's compact evolution of earlier Schock models, targeting the growing trailer-sailer market during the late 1970s IOR-influenced era. Production ran through 1987, with 194 units built overall (primarily 1978–1984). It debuted with the drop-keel 23D variant, followed by the fixed-keel 23K for those preferring simplicity over shallow-water access. The hull lines proved enduring, inspiring the later Santana 2023 (1993) with water ballast updates.
