Santana 22
Description
The Santana 22 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by Gary Mull (his first commercial effort) as a one-design racer and day sailor, renowned for its stable performance in heavy air and responsive handling on lakes or coastal waters. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fixed fin keel and spade rudder for balanced stability and upwind pointing, a masthead sloop rig for simplicity, and a compact interior suitable for short crews or family outings. The design emphasizes durability, with a high ballast ratio providing stiffness in gusts, making it a favorite for club racing and teaching. Introduced in 1966 by W.D. Schock Corp in the United States, the Santana 22 was Mull's first production design, marking the start of his influential career in IOR-era racers. Main production ran until 1976, with approximately 650 units built, followed by an updated version (with minor refinements like improved deck hardware) produced until around 2010, bringing the total to about 800 boats. It was also built under license in Australia by Triton Boat Co. The class remains active with one-design fleets, including nationals and regional regattas, praised for its affordability and fun factor.
