Sandpiper 32

Sandpiper 32

Description

The Sandpiper 32 is a fiberglass round-bilged sharpie-inspired cat schooner (or cat ketch) pocket cruiser designed by Walt Scott (of Clearwater, Florida), drawing from traditional Presto-type shoal-draft sharpie concepts popularized by Commodore Ralph Munroe, featuring a shallow draft with twin centerboards (often called "built keels" or leeboards in some descriptions), freestanding rotating masts for easy reefing/furling around the mast, good heavy-weather stability, and excellent beaching/anchoring capabilities in skinny water, though it performs modestly in light winds due to its moderate displacement and conservative sail plan—ideal for coastal cruising, island hopping, gunkholing, or liveaboard use in protected waters rather than high-performance or offshore passages. Built by Marine Innovators in Florida (some sources note Walt Scott involvement in design/build aspects), it was a limited-production fiberglass model from the late 1970s (examples from 1978–1979 common in listings), with reportedly only about 17 hulls produced, making it quite rare today with surviving boats often refitted by dedicated owners.
