The San Juan 23 Mark I (often just called the San Juan 23) is the original version of this iconic trailerable sailboat, designed by Bruce Kirby in collaboration with Don Clark of the Clark Boat Company. Introduced in 1975, it's a masthead sloop known for its lightweight design, ease of trailering, and balance of racing performance and family cruising. Built primarily with a stub keel and centerboard for shallow-water versatility, it was produced until around 1977, before the updated Mark II (or 23-2) arrived with a taller rig and larger sail area. Over 600 San Juan 23s of all variants were built until 1989, making it a staple for entry-level sailors.
