Sailcrafter 56
Description
The Sailcrafter 56 is a 56.5-foot motorsailer designed by William H. Tripp Jr. and built by Columbia Yachts from 1974 to 1975. This model represents Columbia's venture into the motorsailer market, based on the proven Columbia 57 hull with significant modifications to create a different vessel philosophy. Columbia added a plug to the mold to create a different transom and fitted a center cockpit motorsailer deck, transforming the racing-oriented C-57 into a comfortable cruising motorsailer. With only 18 units built during its brief two-year production run, the Sailcrafter 56 was constructed to order, allowing customers to customize interior layouts while maintaining the standard all-plywood construction that made modifications straightforward. The design philosophy emphasized ease of sail handling in keeping with motorsailer principles, featuring a cutter-rigged ketch configuration with the mizzen mast positioned almost over the rudder post.
